Kendo
Our dedication to preserving traditional martial arts includes our kendo program, introduced to provide students with the opportunity to experience the art of Japanese swordsmanship. Through kendo, we aim to cultivate discipline, focus, and a deep appreciation for cultural heritage.
What is Kendo?
Kendo, often referred to as "the way of the sword," is a modern Japanese martial art rooted in the samurai traditions of feudal Japan. Practiced with bamboo swords (shinai) and protective armor (bogu), kendo emphasizes precision, timing, and mental fortitude.
Its philosophy goes beyond physical technique, promoting self-improvement and respect for one’s opponent. At King Tiger Martial Arts, kendo training instills perseverance and courtesy, encouraging students to grow both as martial artists and as individuals.
Kendo vs Fencing
Kendo can be compared to Western fencing, but the difference is in their cultural origins, equipment, and underlying philosophies.
While fencing involves rapid thrusts and parries with lighter swords such as foils, epees, or sabers, kendo focuses on strikes and thrusts using a shinai and incorporates vocal expressions (kiai) to channel energy and focus. Culturally, kendo is steeped in Japanese traditions, emphasizing respect, ritual, and personal development, whereas fencing’s roots lie in European dueling culture, with a primary focus on sport and competition.
Both martial arts demand exceptional skill and discipline, but kendo’s holistic approach to physical and mental training sets it apart.
